Research on dams under global warming
The following two major points were summarized in the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007:
- Global warming is a fact.
- Mitigation measures will not immediately end warming; adaptive measures are important.
The impact of climate change on dams includes increased flood discharge, longer droughts, and changing snowfall and snow melt patterns. The Japan Dam Engineering Center uses the calculation results of climate models prepared in Japan to evaluate such impact, and conducts surveys and research on adaptive measures necessary to reconstruct discharge systems for dams.
