Rationalization of the design and execution of embankment dams

  • Design and execution
At rockfill dam construction works, considering cost reduction, dam body volume has been reduced through effectively using site sedimentary materials or foundation excavation material, and increasing the density and shear strength by compacting the thin layers to improve the degree of compaction. Records of soil cores and filters at existing rockfill dams are compiled for the study. Related to the spillway which is a large-scale concrete structure, layouts and structures are studied considering the geology and topography to rationalize design and execution. Related to impervious core and filter material, the effective use of materials and the rationalization of design and execution are studied by collecting or ordering the records of completed rockfill dams.

  • Asphalt faced rockfll dam
Asphalt faced rockfill dams (AFRD), which have a surface impervious facing made of asphalt, are now being constructed in Japan to create regulating reservoirs for pumped storage hydroelectric power plants. In order to verify facing materials and design and execution engineering and to promote technical development such as thickening of the asphalt facing pavement, the Japan Dam Engineering Center has established a technique study committee that evaluates and studies facing material design and execution methods, quality control standards, and execution manuals (work methods). The JDEC also evaluates and studies technologies to repair the entire asphalt facing that has been damaged and deteriorated on the surface layer 30 years after the construction was completed.
